Cape Town Concert Brass

Trombones

Unlike the normal valved instruments the trombone has a slide that the player uses to vary the tone - the further out the slide the lower the note.  This allows the player to adjust the pitch gradually, including a smooth change known as a glissando.  With this in mind trombone players are inclined to show off a bit.

This section contains the following players:

  1. Justin Sassman
  2. Jurie Swartz
  3. Mike Nixon
  4. Sarah Calver
  5. Bobby Couves
  6. Roxane Steffen
  7. Roger Wiseman

The players all play tenor trombones, except for Roger who plays the Bass Trombone.  The Bass Trombone has the same natural pitch as an E-flat Tuba and the Tenor Trombones have the same natural pitch as the Euphoniums and Baritones.

Recent trombone players at Cape Town Concert Brass include Sean le Sueur, Emmanuel Nkounkou, Catherine Corkill and Freddy Matondo.  They have all made valuable contributions to the band and are sorely missed.

In addition to the above people we have also been joined in concerts by the likes of Stuart Scott (see Conductors).
