Percussion
This section provides the rhythm for the band.
Currently we have only one percussionist, namely
Chris Lock. In the past we have often been joined by Steve Coltrini
for concerts. Previous percussionists who are much missed by the
band include William Lindsey and Richenda Jacobs.
Chris divides his time between the two forms of
percussion most commonly used in our band, namely Drum Kit and Timpani.
Further information on these two items are:
- The Drum Kit is the normal set of drums that are
used by percussionists in many bands - consisting of a bass drum, side
drum and bongos, and cymbals.
- The Timpani are kettle drums - large drums that
provide a bass rumble for the band. Timpani are set at different
pitches, as required by the piece of music being played.
Some of our music calls for other percussion
instruments as well, including the Glockenspiel, tubular bells, gongs, and
sundry variations on the percussion theme. We hope that in time we
will have enough percussion players to cover all these parts as and when
required.
In the past the band has played
alongside Marimba bands. The Marimba is a percussion instrument much
like a glockenspiel or xylophone. It provides a warm African ethic
sound and blends very well with a brass band.
