Cape Town Concert Brass

Other Cornets

There are three "other" (non-Solo) parts for cornet players in the band.  These are labelled:

  1. Repiano (or First) Cornet.
  2. Second Cornet.
  3. Third Cornet.

Traditional Brass Bands would have one player on the first part and two on each of the other two parts.  We cover the parts with a range of players who play different parts for different pieces (including swapping with the Solo Cornet Bench as well on some occasions).

This section contains the following players:

  1. Sam Kendal
  2. Simon Dodd
  3. Kevin Smuts
  4. Bruce Coomer
  5. Nicky Watson
  6. Justin Fletcher

The cornet has the same pitch as a trumpet but differs in that it has a conical bore - the tubing gets wider as we move from the mouthpiece to the bell (where the sound comes out).  This means that the tone of the cornet is softer and rounder than the sharp attacking tone of the trumpet.

The "back-bench" cornets provide counter-melodies and colouration to the music to support and supplement the work being done on the front benches.
