Flugel Horn
Our flugel horn player is Andrew Cahill.
Occasionally others such as Edouard Zola or James Smith will stand in for
Andrew. Previously the post was occupied by Darryl Woodman.
The flugel horn has the
same pitch as a trumpet or cornet but differs in that it has a wide conical bore -
even wider than a normal cornet. The
tubing gets wider as we move from the mouthpiece to the bell (where the
sound comes out). This means that the tone of the flugel horn is
even softer
and rounder than that of a cornet, and the instrument is very useful for
soft tunes and ballads. The flugel also is used effectively in Jazz
pieces.
